How to Prepare for Your Family Session

Your experience with family photos should be easy, stress free and fun. My goal is to give you photos you will cherish while having fun with your family in the process. Trust me, it’s possible!   Here are my best tips for preparing for your family photos so you can minimize stress and get the best photos possible:

1. Wear what feels good and looks good

Getting your whole family to look their best is sometimes the hardest thing about family photos. Start your planning well in advance to give you time to find, clean, iron and even shop for clothes if needed. Scroll through wardrobe inspiration on my Pinterest board, or get tips on planning for what to wear here.

2. Let Kids be Kids!

The most frequent concern I hear from clients is that their kids won’t cooperate and their investment in time and money will be wasted. Believe me when I say that has never happened! I want you as a parent to stay relaxed and enjoy your time so I can photograph your family at its best. After years of photographing families, nothing will surprise me or frustrate me. My favorite portraits of children happen when they can let their personalities shine through, so I make it a priority to keep them happy and having fun.

If you have preschoolers, prep them in advance for photos. Let them know that they will get their picture taken and that it will be fun! It may also help if you can give the promise of a treat or reward for cooperative behavior afterwards. It can also be fun to incorporate a toy or book into your photos. If you bring something, be sure it will fit with the overall look of your photos.

3. Find a location that fits

I love helping clients find the best location for their photos! Before choosing a photo location, think about what makes your family unique. What locations in Dallas are special to you? What activities do you enjoy doing as a family? Questions like these can help us narrow down location ideas. But always remember: The location is not the subject of the photos, you are! No matter where you are, you will love your photos not because of where you are, but who is in them.

4. Have fun and interact!

Finding special candid moments for my families is what drives me. Throughout your shoot, I’ll ask you to interact in different ways and my hope is that you would have fun with it! I want you to walk away from your session feeling like you just spent some quality time together as a family.

I'd love to help make your family session the best it can possibly be, and love helping clients bring their vision for fun, relaxed and beautiful family photos to life.
