What to Wear for Fall Photos | Fall Style Board

Last October I took what felt like a huge risk and made the decision to focus my photography business on in-home newborn photography. Since then, I've been diving into how to give expecting parents a refreshingly tailored newborn photography experience, from bump to birthday. Lots of business advice would say that making the move to niche-down actually allows you to level-up, and I hope my newborn clients have felt an elevated level of expertise, service and care from me.

When I made the decision, I knew that narrowing my focus would mean that I would have to practice saying no to other work that I really wanted to do, including scheduling family sessions on an ongoing basis. Instead, I've switched to providing family photography at limited volumes and at certain times of the year.

Last week I sent out my fall calendar to my email list, and I am so excited about all the people I get to hang out with during fall mini sessions starting in late August. Right now my calendar is about halfway full, so if you haven’t reserved your spot, you still have a little bit of time. Not on the email list? Join now.

Since you’re in planning mode for fall family photos, why not also plan your wardrobe as well? I always suggest keeping wardrobes for fall portraits neutral and not too heavy, so your images will have staying power year-round while also looking amazing on any holiday card design you choose.

One benefit to going neutral in your clothing choices for portraits is that it allows the moments and emotions present in the images to really stand out. Of course, this is only my point of view, and I always have clients who love color and ask if it is okay to wear them. My answer is yes, it’s totally okay! I want you to look at your photos and feel like they reflect back who you really are, so if that means you wear a pop of color, then please go for it! I am always here to help you put together a wardrobe that feels both cohesive and authentic to your personal style, so please don’t be shy in asking.

The style board below has some great options for a neutral color palette, and I’ll be sharing more style boards here on the blog as fall sessions approach, so be sure to check back!
